English as a Second Language (ESL)

About ESL

Serving a multicultural and multiethnic community is a passion at Sunset Bible Church. One way we do this is by offering an English as a Second Language conversation practice program. This program is aimed at non-native English speakers who wish to improve their English language skills. We know that one of the best ways to become proficient in any language is by using it. Our class provides students a friendly and safe environment to improve English speaking and listening skills as well as ask questions about words, phrases, and colloquial expressions. Each evening we present a topic to help focus our conversation. These topics are specifically meant to provide helpful insight to many of the potentially confusing or intimidating aspects of our culture. Recent topics have included: banking, car registration, elections, hospital visits, and home hospitality.  This is an informal evening spent over snacks and tea.

ESL Bible Study

Because many of our students come from a Christian background, they requested a special ESL Bible study to help them study and discuss the Bible in English. We hold this Bible study 1 hour before conversation class for our students who wish to attend.

ESL in the Summer

During the Summer months we take a break from ESL conversation class and Bible study. However, we enjoy each other's company so much we take the Summer months to learn about and enjoy each other's cultures. We typically do this by having one of our members (a student or teacher) host a dinner at his or her house to introduce us to cultural customs and to share a meal from their culture.
